Top 10 Most Exciting College Football Games of the 2012 Season

top-10-header-exciting games

Yesterday was part one of out “Best of 2012” series. We started it off with The 10 Most Exciting College Football Teams of 2012. Today we will be featuring The 10 Most Exciting College Football Games of the 2012 Season. Enjoy.

The EQ is dependent on several variables including the importance of the game, the depth of the rivalry, the number of exciting plays (i.e. scoring, turnovers), the pace of the action, and how close the score is.

10. Stanford – Notre Dame – 99 EQ – 10/13/2012

stanford-nd-10

This was an exciting game for the true football fan. It was not one of the prettiest games ever played but it was a nail biter that had a lot of importance in the national picture. To add to the excitement there are people who think the game should still be going on. Manti Te’o and the Notre Dame defense “stopped” Stepfan Taylor on the goal line on fourth down in overtime to end the game at 20-13 and continue the Irish’s quest for a perfect season.

9. Baylor – West Virginia – 99 EQ – 9/29/2012

baylor-wv-9

A game that sets the record for most combined points scored by scoring 133 is bound to be exciting. Not to mention the fact that the game was so close. At the end of the game people thought that Geno Smith and his 656 yards passing and 8TDs all but had the Heisman locked up. The score was tied at 35 at halftime and had West Virginia leading 56-42 going into the 4th. Baylor’s Nick Florence did his best to stage a comeback, throwing for 2 TDs and running for one more in the 4th quarter alone. WVU held onto to win 70-63. Both defensive coordinators had a lot of questions to answer.

8. Texas A&M – Louisiana Tech – 100 EQ – 10/13/2012

Johnny Football had a knack for excitement this season. Not only did this game feature the Heisman winner, it also paired the number one highest scoring team in the nation, LA Tech, and the number three highest scoring team in the nation in Texas A&M. These teams lived up to their rankings combining to score 116 points. The Aggies jumped out to an early 27-0 lead but the Bulldogs weren’t ready to stop playing. They gave Texas A&M a fight to the end and it took all of Johnny Manziel’s 6 touchdowns to win the game 59-57.

7. Oklahoma State – Oklahoma – 100 EQ – 11/24/2012

osu-ou-7

Rivalry games are always exciting. When you add in overtime and a total of 99 points being scored it becomes epic. The Sooners overcame double digit deficits in both halfs and never led in regulation. OU was able to fight back and tie the game with 4 seconds left on the clock. Their lone lead of the day came from the deciding field goal in OT making the final score 51-48. OU’s Landry Jones threw for 500 yards and 3 TDs while the Cowboy’s RB Joseph Randle rushed for 4 scores.

6. Stanford – Oregon – 100 EQ – 11/17/2012

stanford-oregon-6

The week of this game, Oregon moved into the top spot nationally and controlled their own destiny for the BCS title game. The Cardinal on the other hand already had two losses and were desperate to win the rest of their games to earn a trip to the Rose Bowl. Somehow, Stanford was able to slow down the second highest scoring team in the nation and play the game more at their speed. Hogan tossed a TD to Ertz with two minutes left to tie the game and send it to OT. In OT, a missed field goal by the Ducks opened the door for Jordan Williamson and the Cardinal finish the upset with a 17-14 victory, holding the Oregon 36 points below their average.

5. UNC – Louisville – September 15, 2012 – 100 EQ

This game was a perfect example of the power of the Thuuz algorithm. Louisville was sitting pretty, up 36-7 at halftime and 39-14 early in the 4th. I am sure most people who were watching this game on TV would call it quits and turn to one of the other ten college football games being broadcast at that time. Four Tar Heel touchdowns later, we had ourselves a game. Hopefully you had Thuuz to tell you to switch this one back on. If you did, you would have caught UNC’s last heave into the end zone in an effort to complete the incredible comeback… only to see a Louisville DB make a game and season saving deflection to hold onto the 39-43 lead.

4. West Virginia -Texas – 100 EQ 10/6/2012

In another early season West Virginia thriller, the #8 Mountaineers went into Austin and took down the #11 Longhorns. While West Virginia was lighting up the score board through the air, Texas was pounding the ball on the ground. Geno Smith threw for 4 TDs and WVU RB Andrew Buie ran for 200 yards and 2 TDs. Smith and Buie each had a 4th quarter TD to lead WVU to a 48-45 win.

3. Texas A&M – Alabama – 100 EQ – 11/10/2012

This game will be known forever as the game in which Johnny Football earned the recognition necessary to win the Heisman. He was a one man highlight reel against the “unbeatable” Alabama Crimson Tide. The Aggies went up 20-0 in the first quarter, shocking the nation. Alabama fought back but could not overcome the Aggies and their freshman leader. Texas A&M went on to win the game 29-24.

2. University of Miami – Georgia Tech – 100 EQ – 11/24/2012

Both of these teams had very forgettable 5-5 seasons in 2012, but the neither will forget this back and forth battle from late November. Miami was able to jump out to a quick 19-0 lead in the first quarter, only to see it taken back by a 36 point run for the Yellow Jackets. Miami miraculously fought back with 17 straight point to tie the game and send it into OT. In OT Hurricane RB Mike James broke off a 25 yard TD to win the game 42 -36, giving Miami a memorable highlight amidst a very mediocre season.

1. Alabama – Georgia – 100 EQ – 12/1/2012

Many college football fans are eager for a playoff system in college football, and this was a glimpse of what it could be like. With Notre Dame undefeated and ranked number 1 this match up between the number 2 and 3 ranked teams in the nation was a great semifinal game. When Bama took on the Bulldogs, it was clear the winner would go to the BCS championship and the loser would head to some lowly bowl. Georgia went up early with a 21-10 lead in the second quarter only to see Alabama and their two headed backfield monster of Yeldon and Lacy combine for over 300 yards and 3 TDs to snatch the lead away and win 32-28. We can only hope the BCS championship between Alabama and Notre Dame will be this exciting.

10. Michigan State University (Thuuz Team Rating = 58.64)

msu-10

The Spartans finished a disappointing 6-6 on the year after being ranked in the top 15 during preseason. Their high excitement rating can be attributed to playing against 5 top 25 opponents and in 7 games decided by 5 or fewer points, two of which went into overtime. They were almost able to take down the undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes but fell just one point short.
